SPIN-OFF: Mediate S.r.l.

Mediate Srl. is a spin-off company of Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna, established with the aim of bringing to the market disruptive technological and scientific advances in robotics improving the efficiency and quality of industrial and medical procedures. Many recent developments in a wide variety of fields, such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), image processing, sensing or cloud computing, have inspired Mediate Srl to “humanize” traditional robotic applications by improving their perception and intelligence.

Currently Mediate Srl has two main business lines: industrial robotic and medical robotic platforms.

The industrial sector focuses on the development and commercialization of a modular, low-integration cost, flexible and easy-to-teach collaborative industrial robotic platform composed of three key modules - Perception, Intelligence and Actuation - enabling human-robot collaborative tasks. Other applications, such as assisted robotic teleoperation with interaction and collision avoidance control or image recognition-based tasks using Machine Learning algorithms for component sorting and visual servoing are already part of the company portfolio.

On the other hand, Mediate is working on a medically-certified robotic platform capable of, with the suitable end-effectors, aiding on medical procedures such as biopsy, laparoscopy or colonoscopy between many others. The first medical application Mediate Srl will target is the colonoscopy. Mediate will bring to the market a robotic platform using a novel magnetically-driven capsule to improve upon traditional colonoscopy. The robotic colonoscopic platform simplifies the procedure for physicians and becomes pain-free for patients. The platform is the result of the European Endoo Project coordinated by Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna together with a Consortium of well-recognized leaders in the field of medical robotic endoscopy.
